

There are a number of other works on this list that are the result of commissions from that group, or were featured in performances by members of that group. ¶ Historically, Taffanel was not only active as a flutist, teacher, and composer, he was also an opera conductor, a Baroque music revivalist (even as he conducted Wagner at the Paris Opéra), a promoter of French music, and founder of the Société de musique de chambre pour instruments à vent (Society of Chamber Music for Wind Instruments) in 1879. Standard repertoire, with enough challenges to keep it interesting for the professional quintet. This is the most popular of the later Romantic-style quintets in the literature (post-Reicha, of course).
